My Podcast Debut

I have mentioned my obsession with podcasts before in my blog, so when I was invited to be the first guest on the Kelownagurl Tris podcast I was beside myself. OK, I did offer to be her guest if she started the podcast, she didn't exactly call me out of the blue.

I have included a picture of Kelowna, BC Canada to the right. Many people wonder why Kelownagurl is named Kelownagurl. You guessed it, she live in Kelowna, BC Canada.

Kelownagurl and I both agree that there was a void in the triathlon podcast world when it came to women in the sport. There are many great running and triathlon podcasts out there but very few (1 or 2 tops) that are hosted by women from a woman's perspective.

Thank you Kelownagurl for filling this void and having me as your first guest. If you find it interesting, I would be happy to give an update in a few months.

Check out Kelownagurl's blog and the podcast at:

Live Your Passion - Amazing Customer Experience

This post ends with "And that is why I love Live Your Passion, BUY STUFF FROM THEM!"

So, for those of you who have the time to read, here is the full story.

Quite a few months ago I started following @liveyourpassion on Twitter. Seemed like a good company offering nice looking after workout casual wear. Right up my alley.

In December, my husband surprised me with a trip to Las Vegas. In addition to booking the flight, hotel and restaurants, he had signed us up for the Run with Santa 5km run in Henderson, LV. It was a really fun and very well organized event. My husband came 1st in his age group and I came 3rd in mine. To top it off, my husband won a door prize of a $25 gift certificate to Fleet Feet Las Vegas.

After returning to the hotel for a shower and big breakfast, we headed out to find Fleet Feet and take advantage of the $25 gift certificate before we left town. Just a quick drive from The Luxor, we easily found Fleet Feet. The staff were extremely helpful and more than willing to help us spend the $25 and then some.

While in the store I noticed a display of t-shirts from Live Your Passion. I commented to one of the staff that I followed Live Your Passion on Twitter. She then told me about her friend Jill who was on Twitter, has a blog and also updates the Fleet Feet website. I immediately knew she was talking about Jill Will Run because I follow her blog. They raved about Live Your Passion clothing. They had a pretty good selection but I knew that there was a larger selection on their website. I chose not to buy there and decided to order over the Internet when I got home.

And that is exactly what I did. A couple of weeks after returning home, I ordered a shirt (pictured above) from the website. The process was easy but I was not sure if the order had been processed since I didn't receive a confirmation e-mail. I sent a Twitter DM to @liveyourpassion to let them know I had just placed the order. A few hours later I received a call from James Schaffer, one of the owners of Live Your Passion. My order had been received and he wanted to confirm the details. He advised me that the shirt was back ordered and it would be a couple of days before it could be shipped. Wow, was I impressed the service at that point.

About 10 days later that my shirt arrived. Because it was shipped from the US to Canada, I had to pay an additional $15 in taxes and fees to FedEx upon delivery. The shirt was exactly what I expected, fit great and is the softest cotton ever.

I thought I should send a Twitter DM to @liveyourpassion to let them know that Canadian orders may be charged the additional fee. The response I received was the ultimate WOW factor. James replied that he had paid FedEx $52 to ship me the shirt! The shirt was only $30 to begin with so this was crazy. James did not seem concerned about the shipping he paid, he was only concerned that I loved the shirt. WOW!

Long term, I would suggest to James and his business partner Josh Mather (also on Twitter) that this is not sustainable business practice. You will not make any money paying people to wear your gear! However, what is does prove is that these guys are serious about their product and their service to go above and beyond. I am certainly sold on their company and their philosophy.

And that is why I love Live Your Passion, BUY STUFF FROM THEM!

Hamstring 'Issue"

So, I guess any Ironman training would not be complete without an 'issue'. I am calling it an 'issue' because I am not ready to call it an injury.

Thursday night I went for a 30 minute interval run on the company treadmill at the end of my day. I was running late so I quickly toweled off, jumped in my car, drove home, wolfed down a protein shake, showered and then went off to a PAC meeting at my son's school. The meeting ended around 8pm and I was home and in bed by 9:30pm setting my alarm for 5:20am the next morning for swim practice.

When I woke up the next morning, I immediately noticed that my left hamstring was tight. Although this was odd, it was not painful. I arrived at the pool and stretched it out before doing my 2500m swim workout. Again, my hamstring was tight but not painful and I hardly noticed it during the swim.

Here is where the story changes. After showering and changing, I joined my swim group at Starbucks for our regular Friday morning coffee. When I was finished coffee and went to get up and drive to work, I really started to notice the tightness in my hamstring becoming more like pain.

By the time I arrived at work (I drive a manual transmission and clutching was starting to become a problem) I could barely sit down. When I did sit down, the pain would radiate down the back of my leg and into the back of my knee.

Good news is that a friend of mine and training partner Dr. Colin McKay is certified in Active Release Techniques. He offered me a same day appointment and determined that the top of my hamstring was inflamed (just in the crease of the butt). He also referred me to a physiotherapist in the area who specializes in Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS). I have an appointment there on Monday evening. I have been warned that this treatment it is painful but it works. I am pretty tough so pain is not a concern for me.

After my ART session last night, my hamstring did feel better but was tight again today. It was suggested that I not run for a couple of days. I did do a 45 minute spin on my bike and it felt OK.

I am hoping that taking care of this early will be beneficial and I will be back running by next weekend. Fingers crossed with treatment, stretching and rest, my hamstring 'issue' will become a distant memory.

Happy training.

A little bit about myself...

I went for a great 2hr run today in Vancouver with my SAA buddies. The great part of the SAA is that we are pretty tight group and come from a variety of backgrounds. Today, I had the pleasure of running today with 2 different members that I had never run with before. On a 2hr run, you can certainly learn a lot about someone. During this run, we were recounting our running history, what motivates us and why we are doing IMC2009. This made me think that I have never talked about this on my posts. So...here it goes.

In 1996 my husband gave me a copy of Oprah book with Bob Greene called Making the Connection. I read this book in about two days and found it motivated me to get in shape again. My weight has never been an issue but in 1996 I had not really workout since high school when I swam with a local swim club. (For the record, my nick name has always been 'solo sport', I have NEVER been competed in team sports).

I started with the Sun Run training program and slowly worked my way up to 10kms. On the day of the Sun Run, I had actually only ever run 6kms but I was sure the adrenaline of the day would pull me through. I was right, the excitement and the 45,000 people running the race got me through. However, I was unable to walk for the next 5 days. Still, I was motivated to continue entering 5km and 10km runs.

This continued on until I became pregnant in 1998. Feeling really tired from the pregnancy, I stopped running or working out at all. This resulted in a beautiful healthy 7lb 3oz baby boy in May 1999 AND a left me 30lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight. I had gained 52lbs in total during my pregnancy.

Now I was officially overweight and need to start exercising again to get the weight off. My local community centre had child minding so I took my newborn son there every Mon/Wed/Fri from about 3 weeks after birth and on. When my son was exactly 5 weeks old I ran/walked a 5km fun run while my thighs rubbed together as I ran.

This continued for a few months and the weight came off I started running more. I enjoyed the time to myself also. As a new mother, it was an opportunity for me to do something for myself without my new baby attached to me. (nursing mothers will know exactly what I mean by this).

Around September 1999 I was introduced to a woman in my area who organized a 1/2 Marathon and Marathon clinic that was starting in October. The goal races were the Pacific Road Runners First Half and the Vancouver Half . I figured, I had been through 12 hours of drug free natural child birth earlier that year so running a 1/2 marathon could not be that hard. I joined the clinic and the rest is history. February 2000 I ran my first 1/2 Marathon and then another one in May 2000. I then trained with the group again the next year and ran my first Marathon in May 2001 in Vancouver. That was also the same year I turned 30. Since then, I have run 6 marathons, about the same number of 1/2 Marathons.

I decided to make the transition to triathlon in 2003. This year, my running partner and good friend was starting a family herself and was no longer able to run. I figured this was a great opportunity to try triathlon. I had been interested in doing a triathlon but was a bit afraid of the whole bike thing. Most people are concerned about the swim, but not me. Speed is not my thing so the thought of a road bike was scary.

So I joined a triathlon clinic and learned from the best. Started out on my Brodie mountain bike in 2004 doing the UBC sprint triathlon. It poured rain and was very cold but I was hooked! Since then, I have done numerous sprints, a few Olympics and one 70.3 (Half Ironman).

Now I am setting my sights on Ironman Canada 2009. I hope you will find my blog interesting and maybe even helpful with your fitness goals or Iromman dreams.

Happy training!

January 11 - Februrary 7 training block

Here is the next four weeks of Ironman Canada training for me.

How do you like the IMC 2009 countdown clock? Thanks to Iron Newman for giving me that idea.

Happy training!

Trainer Ride

Today I had a 1h 45m trainer ride scheduled in my garage. Well, I just completed 1hour and I am done. My body feels good but my brain says "this is really boring".

I am going to research some trainer workouts that are interesting that will keep me motivated. Simply riding for 1h 45m is not stimulating. I was watching one of my favourite shows, What Not to Wear, but even that couldn't keep me on the bike.

Any suggestions on trainer workouts?

Feed Me!

This week was my recovery week in my training program. I did enjoy the shorter one a day workouts but I am still extraordinarily hungry. As part of my unspoken New Year's resolutions, I have planned to try and eat 1/2 as much as I usually do. This has proven to be challenging. I know I still need to keep a balanced diet but portion control is a challenge most of the time for me. Today was a good example of a typical eating day for me (not 'on track' however):

Breakfast
  • Peanut Butter Sandwich
  • 12 oz Accelerade
  • Grande Vanilla Ribios Tea at Starbucks

Snack when I arrived at work
  • Cup of fat free yogurt
  • Large spinach salad with 1 hard boiled egg and dressing
Lunch

  • Butter Chicken with rice from Wok Box

Snack
  • Orange
  • Another cup of fat free yogurt

Dinner

  • Authentic Chinese food dinner for a friend's 1 month baby party

I really need to focus on not getting over hungry and staying on track. I have been able to avoid alcohol and doughnuts with little effort in the first 9 days of 2009. This is a good thing.

Tomorrow, I have a trainer ride schedule and I may skip my Sunday run in lieu of snowboarding in Whistler. I have not been snowboarding in 2 years so that should be interesting.

Happy training!

Happy New Year

Well, January 4th and my first post of 2009. New Year's Eve was pretty quiet at the 337 household this year. No big party or night out, just a relaxing evening with movies. We did go to Gudrun for early evening appetizers around 5:30pm but we were back at home by 7pm watching movies (Get Smart and Mama Mia).

I was pretty good with my training over the holidays and managed to keep myself mostly on track. There were a few workouts missed because of the snow, not to mention a few days of work.

This year, I plan to track all of my workouts in Buckeye Outdoors. It is a great free on-line training log. This way I can track all of my kms on my journey to Ironman Canada in August.

As for New Year's resolutions, I do have a few. It wouldn't be a New Year's post if it didn't have a few.

1. No alcohol until after Ironman. This will not be too much of a problem for me given how little I drink now. Plus, drinking doesn't make me feel like it used to. I have really turned into a lightweight.

2. No doughnuts. This has been a resolution in past years and I did go a full year (2006) without eating a doughnut. This will be tougher than resolution #1 for me.

3. No paper coffee cups. I joined Starbucks on-line community and started this resolution a few months ago. So far it hasn't been too difficult, just takes a little planning.

4. No plastic grocery bags. This will be a new one for me. I have 10+ fabric bags from various stores that sit in the back of my Element that I never use. Now I will have to use them or not buy groceries.

That is it. Four resolutions that I think fit the SMART model of goal planning.

Happy training!
